Künker sale 406, lot 4292

This specimen was lot 4292 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SOLMS-LAUBACH, GRAFSCHAFT, Christian August, 1738-1784. Konv.-Taler 1767, Wertheim, auf das gräflich wetterauische Direktorium. Gekröntes, vierfeldiges Wappen in Rokokkogestell mit Ordensband und Stern, r. dahinter ein rückwärts schauender Löwe, unten Münzstättenzeichen W in Verzierung und X EINE FEINE / MARCK ·, zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur W · - E · (Münzwardein Christian Franz Weber und Münzmeister (Johann Christoph Eberhard). Mit Randschrift: f THUE (Verzierung) RECHT (Verzierung) SCHEUE (Verzierung) NIEMAND. Haussammlung der Fürsten zu Solms-Hohensolms-Lich (Auktion Künker 212) 4208. Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (Germany, county of Solms-Laubach, Christian August, 1738-64, convention thaler of 1737. Wertheim mint, for the Wetterau Directorate. Crowned and quartered arms in a rococo cartouche with order sash and star, supported by a lion, mintmark and weight below; reverse: eight line inscription and date. Minor edge bumps, extremely fine.)"

The Wetterau Directorate, commemorated here, is a body completely lost to history except for this thaler. The county was mediatized to Hesse-Darmstadt in 1806 but the last coinage is dated 1770.
