Solms-Laubach 1768-WWE thaler Dav-2784
This specimen was lot 32222 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "Solms-Laubach. Christian August Taler 1768-WWE MS66+ Prooflike NGC. Simply stunning. It is extremely rare to find an 18th century taler that is a genuinely prooflike issue, and so it is quite exciting to be presenting this piece for sale. This is a coin that was very possibly some sort of presentation strike; the fields are highly reflective and lustrous, and it is clearly one of the first coins struck from freshly prepared dies, giving it its prooflike appearance. It is hard to imagine finding a finer example of this type, and it is quite possible that this specimen does indeed lack an equal." This type honors a local salt mine.
