Slovenia, for many centuries the Austrian province of Carniola, became part of Yugoslavia in 1919. After Josip Broz Tito's death in 1985, the Yugolav confederation slowly came part and Slovenia declared its independence in 1991. This coin was issued from 1992 to 2004. It features a salamander found only in certain caves in Slovenia. To this writer's knowledge, this is the only coin to depict an amphibian. In 2007, Slovenia joined the euro.
