Sinzendorf 1676 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 4165 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,402 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"NEUBURG AM INN, GRAFSCHAFT. Georg Ludwig von Sinzendorf, 1616-1680. 1/2 Reichstaler 1676, Münzstätte vermutlich Wien. RR Feine Patina, vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung Dr. Karl Walter Bach, München. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 122, Osnabrück 2007, Nr. 4558. (Germany, county of Neuburg on the Inn, George Louis of Sinzendorf, 1616-80, half thaler, probably Vienna mint. Rare, fine patina, extremely fine.)
Graf Georg Ludwig (1616-1680) hat in der Geschichte der österreichischen Finanzverwaltung traurige Berühmtheit erlangt. Nachdem ihm bereits eine Reihe von Ämtern und Würden erteilt wurde, ist er 1657 von Leopold I. zum Hofkammerpräsidenten ernannt worden. In dieser Stellung, die er mehr als zwanzig Jahre bekleidete, hat er in großer Maßlosigkeit alle Möglichkeiten ausgeschöpft, um sich persönlich zu bereichern. Wie später nachgerechnet wurde, hatte er dem Staat rund 2 Millionen Gulden Schaden zugefügt. 1680 wurde ihm wegen "Mißbrauch der Amtsgewalt, Meineid, Diebstahl, Unterschleif und Erpressung" der Prozeß gemacht. Die wirtschaftlichen und diffamierenden Folgen blieben ihm jedoch erspart, da er noch im selben Jahr verstarb. (Count Georg Ludwig (1616-80) gained notoriety in the history of Austrian financial (mal)administration. After having been given a number of offices and dignities, he was appointed court president in 1657 by Leopold I. In this position, which he held for more than twenty years, he exploited every possibility of personal enrichment. By the end of his career, he had inflicted about 2 million gulden in damage to the state. In 1680, he was tried for "abuse of official authority, perjury, theft, embezzlement and blackmail". The economic and defamatory consequences, however, were spared him, since he died the same year.)"
This type accompanied a thaler (Dav-3414) and ducat (Fr-3289).
