Steve Album sale 51, lot 711

This specimen was lot 711 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SIKH EMPIRE: AE 1/4 anna , Amritsar, VS[18]96, pa anna nanakshahi type, legends in Persian, VF, R, ex SARC Auction 21, Lot 1296. Herrli divided these into a paisa (=¼ anna) and half paisa (11-12 g and 5.5 g, respectively), but all coins are inscribed "pa anna" for ¼ anna, and all weigh in the range of 6.5 g to 8.2 g; thus there is only one denomination for this type." The SCWC lists this type for VS 1896-1897. It superseded a heavier type which was 11-12 g (KM 4). It seems that no other mint struck this denomination.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 8-9 g, copper, this specimen 7.09 g.

Catalog reference: KM-5, Herrli-01.31.11.
