Sicily 1731-CP SM 6 tari
This specimen was lot 2043 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,560 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, SIZILIEN, Karl III. von Österreich, 1720-1734. 6 Tari 1731, Palermo. RR Vorzügliches Exemplar. Exemplar der Slg. Filippo Patti, Auktion Numismatica Ars Classica 57, Mailand 2010, Nr. 609. (kingdom of Sicily, Charles III of Austria, 1720-34, six tari of 1731, Palermo mint. Rare, extremely fine example.)"
The SCWC notes that 12 carlini = 6 tari = 1 piastra, where a piastra is roughly equal to a peso. Charles II, the last Hapsburg king of Spain, was also king of Naples and Sicily. After his death the area passed out of the hands of the Spanish crown. The Austrians ruled Naples 1707-34 while Sicily was temporarily a possession of the duke of Savoy. Both were reconquered by the Spanish in the 1730's. This rare type is mentioned in Montenegro[2] for 1730-31 as equal to half a piastra.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, 34 mm diameter.
