Shansi Province lies in the north east of China, where the richest coal deposits are located. Mints operated intermittently since 1645. Modern mintage began in 1919 and continued only into the 1920’s.
The specimen shown was lot 21638 in Ponterio sale 165 (Hong Kong, April 2012), where it sold for $1314. The catalog description[1] noted, "Shansi Arsenal. Fen, Year 17 (1928). 山西兵工廠。分，民國 17 年（1928 年）。NGC AU-58."
