CNG Triton XXIX, lot 6672

This specimen was lot 6672 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $581.87. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. Alexander III. 1249-1286. AR Farthing. Second coinage. Struck circa 1280-1286. Crowned head left; scepter before / Long cross pattée; mullets in quarters (4 mullets of 6 points). Iridescent toning, minor deposits, wavy flan. Near VF." Altho farthings and halfpence had long histories in the English coinage, the debasement of Scottish coinage rendered these denominations useless. The last silver farthing listed in Numista is from the reign of David II (1330-35). A few copper farthings are mentioned from the reign of James III (1466-80).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver; this specimen 12 mm diameter, 0.49 g, 7 h axis.
