CNG Triton XXIX, lot 6671

This specimen was lot 6671 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $612.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCOTLAND. Alexander III. 1249-1286. AR Halfpenny. Second coinage. Struck circa 1280-1286. Crowned head left; scepter before / Long cross pattée; voided mullets of six points in quarters. Deeply toned, ghosting. Good VF. Purchased by the consignor from Baldwin’s, October 2020. Ex L. LaRiviere Collection (Spink 179, 29 March 2006), lot 15, purchased from Spink, March 1989." Altho farthings and halfpence had long histories in the English coinage, the debasement of Scottish coinage rendered these denominations useless. The last half penny listed in Numista is from the reign of Robert II (1371-90).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver; this specimen 15 mm diameter, 0.67 g, 4 h axis.

Catalog reference: SCBC 5061.
