Schwyz 1844 rappen
This specimen was lot 4422 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 475 CHF (about US$689 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schwyz, Rappen 1844, Schwyz. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Stempelriss. In ihrer Arbeit zu den Prägevarianten der 2 Rappen, 1 Rappen und Angster des Standes Schwyz (Numis-Post 2019/2020) haben S. Cagno und F. Luraschi jeweils die Anzahl Stempelvarianten nach Jahreszahl aufgelistet. Beim Jahrgang 1843 sind es 17 Varianten, während für 1844 nur gerade diese Stempelkombination bekannt wurde. Der Stempelriss, welcher sich am linken Ende der Jahreszahl in Richtung Stempelrand verfolgen lässt, könnte die Ursache für die Seltenheit dieser Münze darstellen. In their study on the minting varieties of the 2 Rappen, 1 Rappen, and Angster coins of the canton of Schwyz (Numis-Post 2019/2020), S. Cagno and F. Luraschi listed the number of die variants by year. For the 1843, there are 17 variants, while for 1844, only this particular die combination is known. The die crack, which can be traced from the left end of the date toward the rim, could be the reason for the rarity of this coin.)"
This type was struck 1815-16 and 1843-46. After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. The Swiss confederation was reorganized in 1848 and the cantonal issues terminated.
