Schwyz 1842 2 rappen
This specimen was lot 4418 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 225 CHF (about US$326 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schwyz, 2 Rappen 1842, Schwyz. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Teilweise korrodiert. (Switzerland, Schwyz, two rappen of 1842, Schwyz mint. Very rare, Very Fine, Partly corroded.)"
This type was struck 1811-16 and 1842-46. It is confusingly similar to the single rappen (KM 65), being the same weight and diameter, but is billon insted of copper. After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. The Swiss confederation was reorganized in 1848 and the cantonal issues terminated.
Recorded mintage: unknown but a slightly better date.
Specification: 1.24 g, billon, 16.8 mm diameter, this specimen 1.03 g.
