Sincona sale 68, lot 5387

This specimen was lot 5387 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 5,500 CHF (about US$7,241 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Schwyz | misc, 4 Batzen 1810, Aarau. Sehr selten. NGC VF30. (canton of Schwyz, four batzen of 1810, Aarau mint. Very rare.)"

This type is listed for 1810 only from the canton of Schwyz. After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. Not until 1850 would a unified confederation mint her own coins and terminate the local issues. This type was struck 1810-11 and is rare. This specimen realized four times the catalog value. One and two rappen also exist. Forty batzen made a thaler.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.6 g, billon, 23 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 58, D.T. 81a, HMZ 2-807a.
