Sincona auction 98, lot 4401

This specimen was lot 4401 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 400 CHF (about US$580 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Schwyz, 2/3 Batzen 1810, Aarau. Wertangabe "2/3 BATZ:". Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Fast FDC. Wielandt erwähnt auf Seite 71, dass diese Münzsorte im Volksmund "Chäsperli" (kleiner Kaspar) genannt wurde, ein Ausdruck, der früher für die österreichischen 1/4-Kronentaler verwendet wurde. (Switzerland, Schwyz, 2/3 batzen of 1810, Aarau mint, value as '2/3 BATZ:'. Very rare in this condition, About Mint State. Wielandt mentions on page 71 that this coin type was popularly called 'Chäsperli' (little Kaspar), a term formerly used for the Austrian quarter Kronentaler.)"

The SCWC says both KM 56 ("2/3 BATZ:") and KM 63 ("2/3 BATZEN") were struck in 1810. After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. The Swiss confederation was reorganized in 1848 and the cantonal issues terminated.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2 g, billon, 22 mm diameter, this specimen 2.34 g.

Catalog reference: KM 56, D.T. 83a, HMZ 2-809b.
