Schwarzburg-Sondershausen 1677-HM thaler Dav-7689
This specimen was lot 42399 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, September 2026), where it sold for $1,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schwarzburg-Sondershausen. Taler, 1677-HM. Sondershausen Mint. Christian Wilhelm I & Anton Gunther II. NGC EF Details--Mount Removed. Overstruck on uncertain type. Although removed from a mount, this example shows small bits of luster and overall a pleasant patina. An ever popular type that is certain to be most demanded. From the Heisner Collection from Down Under. Ex: Heidelberger 83 (11/2021) Lot # 4098." The county of Schwarzburg-Sondershausen was part of ducal Saxony altho never ruled by the Wittelsbachs. The rulers were raised to the rank of prince in 1697 and the line survived until 1909, when it was merged with Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. This rare issue was accompanied by a double thaler (Dav-7690A) and another thaler (Dav-7690). Thalers from earlier in the century were issued jointly with Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt and Schwarzburg-Arnstadt.
