Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg 1604 1/16 thaler
This specimen was lot 11229 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Copenhagen, June 2026), where it sold for €414.80 (about US$478). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg. 1/16 Taler (Doppelschilling), 1604. Sonderburg Mint. Johann 'the Younger'. NGC EF-40. Nice example for the type. Well-toned. From the L.E. Bruun Collection." The duchy of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg was erected in 1564 by Frederick II of Denmark to give land to his brothers. It was never fully sovereign but the dukes occasionally issued coinage for it. In 1668, the king of Denmark confiscated Sonderburg because of excessive debt. This is a rare one year type.
