Schaffhausen 1631 dicken
This specimen was lot 4385 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 2,750 CHF (about US$3,989 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Dicken 1631, Schaffhausen. Zwei Kugeln oberhalb der Burgzinnen. Rv. Jahreszahl unten im Abschnitt. Seltene Umschriftvariante mit SPS anstelle von SPES. Äusserst seltene Erhaltung. Vorzüglich-FDC. Prachtexemplar mit feinem Prägeglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Hess Divo 325, Zürich, Oktober 2013, Los 608. Exemplar der Auktion Leu 84, Zürich, Oktober 2002, Los 1363. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, dicken of 1631, Schaffhausen mint. Obverse: Two spheres above the castle battlements. Reverse: date in exergue. Rare variety with SPS in the legend instead of SPES. Extremely rare condition, About Uncirculated, Cabinet piece with nice mint luster.)"
The SCWC does not price this type of 1626-27, 1631-35 in any grade higher than Very Fine. The dicken traded for 24 kreuzer or one third of a thaler in the early seventeenth century. The city arms depict an ibex leaping, sometimes by itself or out of a castle window (as here).
