Schaffhausen (16)16 3 kreuzer KM-17
This specimen was lot 5434 in Sincona Auction 102 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,809 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ. Schaffhausen. Groschen 1616, Schaffhausen. Klippe im einfachen Gewicht. Mindere Jahreszahl (16)16. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Herrliche Patina. Fast FDC. (Switzerland, Schaffhausen, klippe groschen of 1616, Schaffhausen mint, abbreviated date. Very rare in this condition, Most attractively toned, About Mint State.)"
This denomination was also struck 1605, 1609-11, 1616 and 1619 in the conventional round format (KM 15). The city arms depict an ibex leaping, sometimes by itself or out of a castle window (as here). One thaler was 90 kreuzer or thirty groschen.
