Schaffhausen 161(1) 3 kreuzer KM-17
This specimen was lot 3419 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 3,200 CHF (about US$4,229 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Groschen 1611, Schaffhausen. Mindere Jahreszahl 161. Abschlag in Klippenform im ungefähr einfachen Gewicht. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. FDC. Feine, dunkle Patina. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, groschen of 1611, struck in klippe format with abbreviated date. Schaffhausen mint. Rare in this condition, Uncirculated, Nicely dark toned.)"
This type was struck in the early seventeenth century with various garbled dates (161x, 1611, (16)16, 1619). A klippe version (KM 17) is shown here. The city arms depict an ibex leaping, sometimes by itself or out of a castle window (as here).
