Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 70779

This specimen was lot 70779 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 2/3 Taler, 1817-IGS. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August I. NGC AU-55. This wholly original looking example exhibits a strong strike with light signs of handling consistent for the grade. The surfaces are smooth displaying mottled rich gray patina." This type was struck 1806-17 and is not rare, tho scarce compared to the thaler (KM 1059.1). It is marked "⅔" but was worth a gulden, that is, half a thaler.

Recorded mintage: 60,000.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.
