Saxony 1813-SGH thaler Dav-856
This specimen was lot 2525 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,507 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, ab 1806 Königreich, Friedrich August III. (I.), 1763-1827. Konventionstaler 1813, Dresden. Ausbeute. Münzmeister Samuel Gottlieb Helbig. Variante mit breiter Krone und kleineren Buchstaben in der äusseren Rückseitenumschrift. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. (Germany, kingdom of Saxony, Frederick Augustus I, 1763-1827, convention thaler of 1813, Dresden mint. Variety with a broad crown and smaller letters in the reverse legend. Rare in this condition. NGC MS64.)"
Friedrich August was a staunch ally of Napoleon and was rewarded by being promoted to king but he waited too long to switch sides after Napoleon's defeat, for which he was punished at the Congress of Vienna by the loss of half his territory. This date has the legend "ZEHN EINE FEINE MARK·1813" reading from left to right (KM 1061, struck 1807-17) or right to left (as here, struck 1811, 1813 and 1815-16). These mining thalers are generally scarcer than the standard issue.
