Saxony 1777-EDC 5 thaler Fr-2876
This specimen was lot 52269 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $4,320. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 5 Talers (August d'Or), 1777-EDC. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August III. PCGS MS-61. Very sharply struck and exceedingly brilliant, this incredible Mint State specimen radiates with tremendous eye appeal and some enchanting, subtle toning accentuating the devices. A majestic piece worthy of a very strong bid." In addition to an extensive series of ducats, the elector also issued this gold five thaler (self-titled an august d'or) in 1777-82 and 1785. It is rare; this is the first one we have posted to this site. The august d'or was struck to the same standard as the Prussian friedrichs d'or.
