Künker sale 386, lot 5415

This specimen was lot 5415 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €420 (about US$543 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Friedrich August II. 1733-1763. 1/24 Taler (Groschen) 1753, Leipzig. Dazu: Brandenburg-Preußen. 3 Pfennig 1658, Berlin. 0,48 g. v. Schr. 1469. RR 2 Stück., Feine Patina, fast vorzüglich und Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. Exemplare der Sammlung Fritzotto Bauss. Exemplar der Auktion Münzzentrum 78, Köln 1994, Nr. 4118 (1/24 Taler). (electorate of Saxony, Frederick Augustus II, 1733-63, 1/24 thaler or groschen of 1753, Leipzig mint. Included is a three pfennig of Brandenburg of 1658, Berlin mint. Very rare, two pieces, fine patina, about extremely fine and very fine with planchet defects.)"

This one year type is a greatly simplified version of the regular groschen (KM 884) of 1734-60, which bore the initials "FWoF". In 1753, the army of Frederick the Great had occupied most of Saxony, including Dresden, forcing the elector to retreat to Leipzig. The thaler, which was ninety kreuzer at the beginning of the century, rose to 120 kreuzer with the adoption of the convention thaler about this time.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 1.82 g.
