Saxony in 1648

This specimen was lot 687 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,233.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1713-ILH. NGC EF Details--Mount Removed. Friedrich August I (1694-1733). Attractively toned around edges." This type was issued steadily 1709-33 but is still scarce, like most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760. The elector's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2653; KM-776; Schnee-1015.
