Saxony 1614 thaler Dav-7583
This specimen was lot 1502 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 2,600 (about US$3,426 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Talerklippe 1614. Auf das Armbrustschiessen bei der Taufe von Prinz August. Vorzüglich. (Electorate of Saxony, klippe thaler of 1614, for the crossbow shooting festival held for the baptism of Prince August, extremely fine.)"
Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. Klippe thalers, struck on square planchets, were originally issued during sieges but later became associated with special occasions such as baptisms and coronations. Davenport notes a double thaler and a triple thaler issued for this occasion, also klippes.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.11 g.
