Künker sale 406, lot 4353

This specimen was lot 4353 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,181 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, KURFÜRSTENTUM, Christian II. Johann Georg I. und August, 1591-1611. Dicker doppelter Reichstaler 1602, Dresden. In US-Plastikholder der NGC mit der Bewertung VF DETAILS MOUNT REMOVED (6062386-008). R Henkelspur, sehr schön. Exemplar der Michael S. Tallent Collection, Auktion Stack's, New York, April 2008, Nr. 247. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, Christian II, John George I and August, 1591-1611, thick double thaler of 1602, Dresden mint. Graded NGC VF DETAILS MOUNT REMOVED, rare, mount mark, very fine.)"

This type, struck 1601-05, shows Christian on the obverse and his brothers on the reverse. Christian II succeeded to the electorate in 1591, aged eight. Dominated by his mother, he lapsed into alcoholism and died of a heart attack, aged 27.
