Sincona sale 13, lot 2148

This specimen was lot 2148 in Sincona sale 13 (Zürich, October 2013), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$388 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "DEUTSCHLAND, Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Albertiner, Christian II., Johann Georg und August unter Vormundschaft, 1591-1611, Taler 1593. Dresden, Sehr schön-vorzüglich." This type was struck in 1592-1601 for dukes Christian II, Johann Georg and August of Saxony. The SCWC notes that this type was struck by the regent Friedrich Wilhelm von Saxe-Altenburg on behalf of the three young brothers shown on the obverse. Davenport has assigned number 9820 to the 1592-1600 issue and number 7557 to the 1601 issue but they are the same type. The coin is common for the era.
