This specimen was lot 22182 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $382. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony-Albertine. Taler, 1587. NGC AU Details--Mount Removed. Toned." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was struck 1586-91. A double thaler also exists.
