This specimen was lot 31111 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxe-Weimar. Johann Ernst Taler 1617-WA MS63 NGC, Saalfeld mint. Depicting Johann Ernst and his seven brothers, and featuring the intricate coat of arms surmounted by six crested helmets on the reverse. Beautifully preserved and virtually untoned. Ex. Johann Max Böttcher Collection (Harald Möller Auction 47, November 2007, Lot 1014). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." This type was struck 1616-19 in Saxe-Weimar and is among the more common thalers of the period. The eight brothers depicted were co-rulers of the tiny state; the last one, William IV, died in 1662.
