Saxe-Weimar 1608-WA 1/4 thaler
This specimen was part of lot 1027 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), where it sold for €110 (about US$152 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE-WEIMAR, Johann Ernst et ses frères (1605-1626), lot de 2 p.: quart de Taler, 1608; demi-Taler, 1611, Saalfeld. Koppe 195, 196. Traces de bélière. Beau à Très Beau. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weimar, John Ernest and his brothers, 1605-26, quarter thaler of 1608 and half thaler of 1611, Saalfeld mint. Traces of mount marks, Fine - Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1608-11 in Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and is fairly common for a quarter thaler. The eight brothers depicted were co-rulers of the tiny state; the last one, William IV, died in 1662. Saxe-Middle Weimar existed only for 1605-40 before being partitioned by the surviving brothers.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
