This specimen was lot 33097 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxe-Middle-Weimar. Eight Brothers 2 Taler 1608-WA VF25 NGC, Coburg mint. A pleasing Double Taler example from this three-year series, featuring the eight sons of Johan III on evenly-patinated graphite-colored surfaces. Rarely-offered and very collectible at this level." This type was struck 1607-09 in Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and is among the more common double thalers of the period tho still expensive. The eight brothers depicted were co-rulers of the tiny state; the last one, William IV, died in 1662.
