Saxe-Saalfeld 1729 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1684 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 425 CHF (about US$589 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld, Herzogtum. Johann Ernst VIII. 1680-1729. 1/2 Taler 1729, Saalfeld. Auf seinen Tod. Vorzüglich. Feine Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, John Ernest VIII, 1680-1729, half thaler of 1729, Saalfeld mint, on his death. Extremely Fine, Nicely toned.)"
This half thaler was issued for the death of the duke along with a thaler. Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld was created in 1735 when the duke of Saxe-Saalfeld received Coburg and ended in 1826 when Coburg was traded to Saxe-Gotha.
