This specimen was lot 1329 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,455 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-SAALFELD, HERZOGTUM, AB 1735 SACHSEN-COBURG-SAALFELD Johann Ernst VIII. 1680-1729. Reichstaler 1729, Saalfeld, auf seinen Tod. Hübsche Patina, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Saalfeld, John Ernest VIII, 1680-1729, thaler of 1723, Saalfeld mint, on his death. Toned extremely fine.)"
This thaler was issued for the death of the duke. A similar half thaler exists.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.
