Saxe-Old Gotha 1633-MR thaler Dav-7432
This specimen was lot 42308 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1633-MR. Saalfeld Mint. Johann Casimir and Johann Ernst II. NGC AU-53. An alluring example of a rather elusive Taler, providing appealing preserved brilliance, handsome warming toning peppered throughout the surfaces, and lighter circulation than one might expect for the grade. About as wholesome as one could expect from a circulated Taler, and deserved of much attention on these merits." The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920. This division of the Saxon lands lasted 1572-1638. Saxe-Neu-Gotha dates from 1640. This type was struck 1633 only; it is likely that Johann Casimir's death in that year interrupted production.
