Künker Auction 441, lot 4486

This specimen was lot 4486 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,926 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, HERZOGTUM (Ernestiner nach dem Verlust der Kurwürde) Johann Friedrich II., 1557-1567, gestorben 1595 in Gefangenschaft. Taler 1558, Saalfeld. R Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Gerhard Hirsch XLIV, München 1965, Nr. 799. (duchy of Saxony, Ernestine line after the loss of the electoral cap, John Frederick II, 1557-67, died in captivity 1595, thaler of 1558, Saalfeld mint. Rare, very fine.)"

In 1554, the Ernestine possessions were divided into Saxe-Eisenach and Saxe-Coburg (John Frederick II, shown here), Saxe-Weimar (John William) and Saxe-Gotha (John Frederick III). John Frederick II was imprisoned by the emperor and John Frederick III died without heirs, forcing a reshuffle of the Saxon duchies. The division of Erfurt in 1572 made permanent the partitioning of ducal Saxony into fragments. Until then, the head of the family (John Frederick II in this case) issued coins for all the branches; after that, each line issued its own. This type, struck 1558-59, is considerably scarcer than Dav-9753 (obverse legend "D:G:IOAN:FRIDE: SECVNDVS:DVX:SAXO:"), struck 1558-66.
