This specimen was lot 31018 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Saxony. August I Taler 1558-HB AU50 NGC. Fine old collection toning with deep gray and red hues, a clear, bold strike with a very pleasing overall eye-appeal." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This Davenport type was struck 1556-67 at Dresden and is common.
