This specimen was lot 954 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXONY: August, 1553-1586, AR thaler, 1559, once lightly cleaned a long time ago, XF-AU, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This Davenport type was struck 1556-67 at Dresden and is common. It was issued by the Albertine branch of the dynasty.
