Künker Auction 426, lot 3819

This specimen was lot 3819 in Künker Auction 426 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €1,550 (about US$2,195 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN, HERZOGTUM (Ernestiner nach dem Verlust der Kurwürde) Johann Friedrich II., 1557-1567, gestorben 1595 in Gefangenschaft. Taler 1561, Saalfeld. Seltener Jahrgang. Fast sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxony, Ernestine line after the lost of the electorate, John Frederick II, 1557-67, died in captivity in 1595, thaler of 1561, Saalfeld mint. Rare date, about very fine.)"

This type is listed for 1558-66 and is scarce but not rare. It was issued by the Ernestine duke Johann Friedrich II a few years before his realm was divided into Saxe-(Old) Gotha, Saxe-(Old) Weimar and Saxe-Coburg. Johann Friedrich II retained Saxe-Gotha. This locale is sometimes called Saxe-Old Gotha to distinguish it from Saxe-New Gotha, a later creation of the endless shuffles of the Saxon duchies.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, this specimen 28,28 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB389, Dav-9753; Schnee 159; Koppe 295.
