Künker sale 263, lot 1320
Sincona sale 43, lot 2159

The first specimen was lot 1320 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,421 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-MEININGEN, HERZOGTUM, VON 1735 BIS 1826 SACHSEN-COBURG-MEININGEN Bernhard Erich Freund, 1803-1866. Konv.-Taler o. J. (1803), auf den Tod seines Vaters, Herzog Georg, am Weihnachtsfest. Fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Meiningen, Bernhard Erich Freund, 1803-66, undated convention thaler (about 1803), on the death of the duke's parents. Choice extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 2159 in Sincona sale 43 (Zürich, October 2017), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$2,864 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Sachsen-Meiningen, Herzogtum, Bernhard Erich Freund, 1803-1866 Konventionstaler o. J. (1812). Saalfeld Auf den Tod seines Vaters Herzog Georg. Geprägt unter der Vormundschaft von Herzogin Luise Eleonore. Sehr selten. Nur 120 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Meiningen, Bernhard Erich Freund, 1803-66, undated convention thaler struck 1812, on the death of the duke's father. Made under the regency of duchess Louisa Eleanor. Very rare. Only 120 pieces struck, Extremely fine, Attractive patina.)"

Saxe-Meiningen is now part of Thuringia. This type was long attributed to the eighteenth century but it is now regarded as having been struck in 1803. It is the last convention thaler from this locale; the next issue (Dav-838) was a vereinsthaler of 18.52 g.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver, lettered edge.
