Saxe-Lauenburg 1670 thaler Dav-7353
This specimen was lot 306 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 6,500 CHF (about US$9,906 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Lauenburg, Herzogtum, Julius Franz, 1666-1689. Taler 1670, Ratzeburg. Münzmeister Henning Ilders. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Hübsche Patina. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg, Julius Francis, 1666-89, thaler of 1670, Ratzeburg mint. Very rare, especially in this condition, Extremely Fine, Attractively toned.)"
Julius Franz was duke of Saxe-Lauenburg 1666-89. On the duke's death, the duchy passed to Brunswick-Luneburg and was traded several times before becoming part of Prussia in 1864.
