Sincona sale 33, lot 2246
Lauenburg in 1789, as part of Hannover

This specimen was lot 2246 in Sincona sale 33 (Zürich, October 2016), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Lauenburg, Herzogtum, August von Sachsen 1619-1656 Taler 1624. Lauenburg. Sehr schön-vorzüglich, Herrliche Patina. (Germany, duchy of Lauenburg, Augustus of Saxony (1619-56), thaler of 1624, Lauenburg mint. Very fine-extremely fine, Most attractive patina.)"

Lauenburg, upstream of the Elbe from Hamburg, was ruled by a family of Saxon dukes from 1260 until 1689, whereupon it was annexed by Brunswick-Luneburg. The thalers from this locale, including this one, are generally rare, but this one is probably the most available. It was struck 1620-24.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.06 g.

Catalog reference: KM 62, Dorfmann 86 a; Dav-7344.
