Künker sale 335, lot 3995

This specimen was lot 3995 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €8,500 (about US$11,123 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LAUENBURG, HERZOGTUM. Franz II. 1581-1619. Breiter 1 1/2facher Reichstaler 1610, Lauenburg. Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit umgelegter Feldbinde, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, davor Helm//Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen. Von großer Seltenheit. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, Felder min. altgeglättet, sehr schön +. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Lauenburg, Francis II, 1581-1619, 1½ thaler of 1610, Lauenburg mint. Obverse: armored bust right with helmet and scepter; reverse: triple helmeted, quartered arms. Very rare, attractive example with fine patina, fields smoothed, very fine or better.)"

Lauenburg, upstream of the Elbe from Hamburg, was ruled by a family of Saxon dukes from 1260 until 1689, whereupon it was annexed by Brunswick-Luneburg. This type was accompanied by a very similar 1¼ thaler (Dav-LS431B) and other multiple thalers.
