Lauenburg in 1648

This specimen was lot 4284 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,500 (about US$2,064 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LAUENBURG, HERZOGTUM August, 1619-1656. Reichstaler 1624, Lauenburg, mit Titel Ferdinands II. RR Hübsche Patina, leichte Prägeschwäche, sehr schön. Exemplar der Lagerliste Udo Gans 55, Arnsberg 1999, Nr. 3233. (duchy of Lauenburg, August, 1619-56, thaler of 1624, Lauenburg mint, struck in the name of Ferdinand II. Very rare, handsome patina, slightly weakly struck, very fine.)"

Lauenburg, upstream of the Elbe from Hamburg, was ruled by a family of Saxon dukes from 1260 until 1689, whereupon it was annexed by Brunswick-Luneburg-Celle. The thalers from this locale, including this one, are generally rare.
