This specimen was lot 1286 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Hildburghausen. Taler, ND (1780-84). PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, Unc Details Secure Holder. Joseph Friedrich as Regent (1780-84)." The odd appearance of the obverse, where the duke appears to be sinking into the field, is caused by over-polished dies, likely done in an attempt to remove die-clash, the bane of minters.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
