This specimen was lot 2581 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXE-COBURG-GOTHA: Ernst II, 1844-1893, AE 2 pfennig, Dresden, 1856, mintmaster initial F, a wonderful mostly red lustrous example! PCGS graded MS64 RB." This type was struck 1847, 1851-52 and 1856, of which the last is the most common date. One of Ernest's brothers married queen Victoria and became Albert, Prince Consort. This tiny state was merged with the other Saxon duchies into the state of Thuringia in 1920.
