Sardinia JElsen 269-984r.jpg

This specimen was lot 984 in Jean Elsen list 269 (Brussels, July-August 2014), where it was offered for €240 (about US$327). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, SAVOIE et SARDAIGNE, Victor Emmanuel II (1849-1861), AV 20 lire, 1860 P, Gênes. Très Beau (kingdom of Sardinia, Victor Emmanuel II (1849-61), gold twenty lire of 1860, Genoa mint, very fine.)"

This type was struck at the Genoa and Turin mints 1850-61 during the reign of Victorio Emanuele II of Italy, while he was merely King of Sardinia (1849-60). It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French twenty francs. It is, however, reasonably common.

Recorded mintage: 163,322.

Specification: 6.45 grams, 0.900 fine gold, .186 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Mont-25; Gig-19; Fr-1147; KM 146.2 (formerly KM-C126.1).
