Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 56854

This specimen was lot 56854 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. 20 Lire, 1851-B. Turin Mint. Vittorio Emanuele II. PCGS AU-53. Eagle's head mintmark." This type was struck at the Turin and Genoa mints 1850-61 during the reign of Victorio Emanuele II of Italy, while he was merely King of Sardinia (1849-60). It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French twenty francs. It is, however, reasonably common.

Recorded mintage: 162,988, a common date.

Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, 21 mm diameter.
