Sardinia 1851(g) P 20 lire
This specimen was lot 1323 in Jean Elsen sale 137 (Brussels, June 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, SAVOIE et SARDAIGNE, Victor Emmanuel II (1849-1861), AV 20 lire, 1851P, Gênes. Fine griffe et léger coup sur la tranche. presque Superbe. (kingdom of Sardinia, Victor Emanuel II, 1849-61, gold twenty lire of 1851, Genoa mint. Fine scratch and light rim nick, about Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck at the Turin and Genoa mints 1850-61 during the reign of Victorio Emanuele II of Italy, while he was merely King of Sardinia (1849-60). It is struck to the same standard as the contemporary French twenty francs. It is, however, reasonably common.
Recorded mintage: 295,792.
Specification: 6.45 g, 0.900 fine gold, .186 troy oz AGW, this specimen 6.43 g.
