Sincona sale 38, lot 1565

This specimen was lot 1565 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Carlo Felice, 1821-1831 80 Lire 1827. Genova. Vorzüglich. Kleine Randfehler. (kingdom of Sardinia, Charles Felix, 1821-31, eighty lire of 1827, Genoa mint, Extremely fine, Small rim nicks.)"

This type was struck at Turin and Genoa (shown here) 1823-31 and all dates are rare, altho the 1827 eighty lire from Genoa is more available than the twenty lire of the same date. While France was striking twenty and forty francs in gold, Sardinia seems to be the only state which used the eighty lire. The denomination was dropped in 1832 for the hundred lire.

Recorded mintage: 14,733 (highest mintage date).

Specification: 25.80 grams, 0.900 fine gold, .746 troy oz AGW, 33 mm diameter, this specimen 25.79 g.

Catalog reference: Nomisma 526. Schl. 148. Fr-1133, KM 123.2.
