Sardinia 1741 1/2 soldo
This specimen was lot 2174 in Jean Elsen sale 145 (Brussels, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, SAVOIE et SARDAIGNE, Charles Emmanuel III (1730-1773), Cu cagliarese vecchio, 1741, Turin. Pour la Sardaigne. D/ B. à d. R/ Croix cantonnée de quatre t. de Maure. Très Beau. (Italy, Savoy and Sardinia, Charles Emmanuel III, 1730-73, copper cagliarese vecchio of 1741, Turin mint, struck for Sardinia. Obverse: bust right; reverse: cross cantonned with four Moor's heads. Very Fine.)"
In 1720, the Austrians traded Sardinia to Savoy in exchange for Sicily. The duke of Savoy, who would have preferred to keep Sicily, reluctantly adopted the title of king of Sardinia. This type was struck for the island 1732, 1741 and 1745 and was not intended to circulate on the mainland.
