This specimen was lot 72449 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAN MARINO. 500 Lire, 1975. Rome Mint. PCGS MS-68. Struck to commemorate the opening of the Numismatic Agency. A exceptionally well made example with gold and blue toning throughout. Nearly 1/4 of the total coins minted of this issue were melted down by the mint, leaving this Superb Gem near the top of its class, with just one graded finer by PCGS." San Marinan coinage, which is mostly NCLT's, is struck at Rome. The figure on the reverse is noted by the SCWC as an "ancient stonecutter" but we think "ancient die engraver" seems more plausible.

Recorded Mintage: 200,000.

Specification: 11 g, 0.835 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM 48.
